Best Books To Take On Your Holiday This Travel Season.

Your flights are booked. Your hotels are secured. You’ve purchased everything you need from your holiday wishlist. It’s time to think about what book you will take with you. Whether you’re heading to Bali for one week or Europe for one month, picking the book you want to travel with is the final decision you need to make before your holiday. Lucky for you, the Sortd team are avid readers and have curated a wishlist filled with our favourite books to take with you on your getaway.

Fantasy

For all those who have recently fallen into the fantasy cult - we’re right there with you! After growing up reading books like The Lord Of The Rings, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, most of us were over the moon to see fantasy books becoming the new cool genre to read.

For many of us, Sarah J. Maas re-introduced this genre to us with her 5-book series ‘A Court Of Thorns And Roses’. If you’ve heard anyone talk about fairy porn recently, this is why. PSA - before you start this book, you should be warned that Sarah Maas has written 3 series with overlapping universes, all of which are insanely addictive and likely to consume you for your entire trip.

Rebecca Yarros’ ‘Fourth Wing’ and ‘Iron Flame’ books take on another angle of the fantasy world - dragons. Think of this book as a combination of Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Both books will have you hooked and lowkey leave you wanting a pet dragon.

We’ve covered fairies and dragons, so of course, vampires are next. ‘The Serpent and the Wings of Night’ by Carissa Broadbent is the most recent addition to the fantasy world cult. If you loved Vampire Diaries, this book is for you!

Romance

For the hopeless romantic! There’s something about losing yourself to a story about someone else’s love life that is just oh-so soothing.

Our most recent favourite romance pick is ‘Hello Beautiful’ by Ann Napolitano (also a favourite in Oprah’s book club). This story seamlessly combines tragedy with love. You’ll bounce between loving and hating the characters throughout the entire read.

Next in line is ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney. This is a book that became even more popular after the 2020 TV series adaption. For those who fell in love with the series but never read the book - trust us, it’s worth it!

Last is an oldie but a goodie. ‘The Bronze Horseman’ by Paulina Simons is a coming of age book for most women. It’s one of the few books that transcends generations, where women in their teens and women in their 60’s can enjoy it equally. If you love a love story based in WWII, this book is a must-read.

Thriller

There’s something about a gruesome, scary story that soothes the soul. We can’t explain why we find true crime podcasts relaxing just as much as we can’t explain why reading a thriller before bed helps us go to sleep. Some things you just need to accept.

One of our favourite thriller books to take on your next holiday is ‘None of this is true’ by Lisa Jewell. This is a book that you can finish on a long-haul flight and one that you won’t put down once.

‘The Housemaid’ by Freida McFadden is a recent fave and one that will keep you on edge the entire time.

Lastly, ‘The Whisper Man’ by Alex North is for the more extreme lover of thriller. This book was genuinely scary, yet it managed to keep us on our toes the entire time.

General Fiction

To finish off, we needed to cover the books that don’t fit into one genre but absolutely deserved a mention.

Demon Copperhead’ by Barbara Kingsolver is a hilarious, heartbreaking and eye-opening book that will make you feel all the feels. This book was inspired by Charles Dickens’ ‘David Copperfield’ and is a modern interpretation of institutional poverty and its impacts on children.

The Heart’s Invisible Furies’ by John Boyne was unanimously the most loved book by the Sortd team this year. Set in Ireland in the 1940s and spanning to the modern day, this book will get you hooked from page 1. Honestly, no words can do this book justice. Trust us and read it.

Lastly, a crowd favourite, ‘Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow’' by Gabrielle Zevin. Two friends—often in love, but never lovers—come together as creative partners in the world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. This book is easy to read and even more easy to love!
